Knowledge is Power
Perhaps one of the most important components to healthy practice is all members having a strong knowledge of Team Racing strategy. Because there are so many variables within the situations on the race course, it becomes necessary to spend your time on the water watching and participating in team racing. Time on shore should be devoted to discussing tactics and strategy. A magnetic chalkboard with magnetic cut out sailboats is an excellent tool to visually display the dynamic, changing tactical situations which occur during the team race. A magnetic chalkboard or even a refrigerator can accommodate your fleet of two magnet boat Team Racing teams. Setting up the situations with magnetic sailboats on the board easily illustrates a developing mark passing or final beat scenario. Tactical and strategic decision making and situation recognition is enhanced by discussions using a magnetic chalkboard. Understanding strategy and seeing it on the chalkboard enhances a team member’s recognition of a developing scenario on the water. Do your homework! Learn the tactics and strategy at practice and then study the concepts at home. The better understanding a team member has off the water, the less likely they are to get confused by introducing variables on the race course.
